2014 Spring Break Trip
March 17-2014

The Lakers are headed to Pebble Beach!

Here are the details of what will be an absolutely amazing Spring Break Trip:

Courses & Amenities

Any words that I might offer would surely fail to fully describe the beauty, history, and legend that surround Pebble Beach. Suffice it to say, there’s no other place like it on earth. And as any golfer will attest, it’s an absolute dream to have the opportunity to experience it. Click here for details of this amazing and wonderful linksland: http://www.pebblebeach.com/

The boys will also tee it up at Del Monte Golf Course. A true gem, Del Monte first opened its doors in 1897 and has served as a true test for countless golfers ever since. Click here for information regarding Del Monte: http://www.pebblebeach.com/golf/del-monte-golf-course

The Lakers will stay at the Inn at Spanish Bay. Recently rated by Businessweek as one of the World’s 50 Most Decadent Hotels, The Inn at Spanish Bay is a remarkable facility with breathtaking accommodations. The Inn rests ocean-side and will offer the boys the finest amenities imaginable during their time in Monterey. Click here for details of the Inn at Spanish Bay: http://www.pebblebeach.com/accommodations/the-inn-at-spanish-bay

The Golf Staff at Pebble Beach is currently planning another special experience for the Lakers. Rumor has it, this may include enjoying the famous Peter Hay Par Three Course at Pebble Beach. Our fingers are crossed with hopes that this event comes to fruition. Click here for information regarding Peter Hay: http://www.pebblebeach.com/golf/peter-hay-golf-course

Cost:

Pebble Beach has gone above and beyond to support our efforts to serve the boys. In addition, considerable resource has been anchored through private (and anonymous) funding sources. Overlay these realities with gracious assistance from the PGA Professional Staff, and we find ourselves in receipt of substantial generosity. Accordingly, I’m pleased to say that this year’s Spring Break Trip maintains the same relative cost of participation as all past Spring Break Trips.

The cost to participate in the 2014 Spring Break Trip is $1,250.
This amount is all-inclusive and incorporates the following into pricing: airfare, van transportation, accommodations, golf at Del Monte, golf at Pebble Beach, meals, and associated on-site special events.
A non-refundable deposit of $500 is due via check upon registration.

Deposits for $500 should be made payable to “The Boys’ Latin School” with “2014 Golf Spring Break Trip” noted in the check’s memo portion.

Checks should be given to Phyllis Novotny in the Athletic Office.

Capacity

The 2014 Spring Break Trip is open to nine (9) team members. Nine (9) team members are necessary for the trip to take place. Capacity greater or less than nine (9) team members is not an option.

Registration

Please contact Coach Champion directly to register and forward the $500 deposit via check to Phyllis Novotny by January 8th at 3:00 PM.

2013 Spring Break Trip
March 14-17, 2013

The boys will saddle-up and travel to Lajitas Golf Resort in West Texas and tee it up at Black Jack’s Crossing – one of the most aesthetically remarkable layouts in golf.

Lajitas is an old border town that’s nestled between the Rio Grande and Big Bend National Park.  Situated across 27,000 acres, the resort sheds new light on the term “remote location.”  It’s 300 miles west of San Antonio and 250 miles southeast of El Paso.  Suffice it to say, this resort is as out-of-the-way as they come.  Breathtaking views of the desert, canyons and mountains await the Lakers – and they will no doubt be taken aback by the beauty and powerful imagery of the surrounding Texas badlands.

There’s something else particularly special about Lajitas…the golf course.  Designed by Lanny Wadkins and opened to great acclaim in 2011 (after the old links was washed out in a flood), the course – dubbed “Blackjack’s Crossing” – is a 7,400 yard monster that stretches throughout the mountains and desert.  The course’s routing climbs the 100 foot elevation of the Mesa de Anguilla – providing views that stretch for more than 40 miles.  Named for General Blackjack Pershing (who chased Pancho Villa across the Rio Grande), Blackjack’s Crossing has been one of the United States’ most impressive success stories of recent course design.

The boys are being given the option to play 72 holes at Blackjack’s Crossing.  What’s more, steps are in place to offer the Team a unique R&R experience – currently slated as a tour of Big Bend National Park by way of horseback…or perhaps, Jeep (we’ll see).  The boys will enjoy team breakfasts and dinners at the resort’s Candelilla Café and lunches between rounds at Blackjack’s Crossing.  And they will share rooms at the on-site lodge facilities.

The generosity extended to our boys by Lajitas and Blackjack’s Crossing is amazing.  They have gone above and beyond to accommodate our Team – and we are truly fortunate to be in receipt of their gracious hospitality. Without their willingness to discount their pricing to base levels, we’d not have the chance to experience Lajitas.

I’d like to emphasize that Blackjack’s Crossing was the #1 destination that I targeted for the 2013 Trip.  It was atop my list.  Nothing above it.  This journey, this location,  this course, this experience…will be like nothing the boys have yet to experience.  There’s only 1 place in the world like this.

Anyway, here are the details:

2012 Fall Retreat
September 21-23, 2012

The 2012 Boys’ Latin Golf Team Fall Retreat is slated for September 21st-23rd and promises to be an event to remember!

This year, the Lakers will travel to West Virginia for a weekend of Championship Golf, Team Building Exercises, Custom Club Fitting, and Cabin Accommodations.

The boys will be playing The Pete Dye Golf Club!  Nestled in the Bridgeport countryside, The Pete Dye Golf Club is an amazing oasis of golfing brilliance – and boasts a National Ranking of #45 among America’s Top 100 Courses, as well as the #1 slot in the state.  What’s more, The Pete Dye Golf Club is rated #10 in the Country for Modern Golf Course designs.  Click here for a photo gallery and prepare to be amazed: http://www.petedye.com/sites/courses/layout9.asp?id=758&page=63129.  As it stands presently, the boys will be playing 18 holes at Pete Dye Golf Club – perhaps 36.  Commitment for round two is pending.

The boys are also tentatively slated to play Musket Ridge Golf Course.  Consistently ranked as one of Maryland’s Top 10 courses, Musket Ridge boasts a challenging layout across a beautiful linksland.  Click here to check out Musket Ridge: http://www.musketridge.com/club/scripts/section/section.asp?GRP=17470&NS=GOLF

Additionally, the Lakers will be participating in a personalized Custom Club Fitting with Yes! Putters.  Prior to departing for the retreat, a Professional Staff Representative of Yes! Putters will fit each participant for a brand new Yes! Ann Model Putter (retail price range: $100-$150).  Click here for details of the Yes! Ann Putter: http://yesgolf.com/legacy-putters/the-ann/ ;

What’s more, the boys will be staying in cabins on the property of Tygart Lake State Park in Grafton, WV.  Tygart Lake is situated amongst the hills and forests of West Virginia, and along a 1,700 acre lake.  The cabins are rustic structures with bedrooms, bathrooms, fireplaces and small kitchens…and not much else (no television!).  The boys will cook dinner over campfires – hot dogs, baked beans, and ‘smores galore!  They will trek the “Dogwood Trail” in a 2 mile team hike.  And they will experience team building and group development through exposure to the outdoors – decompression at the hands of mother nature.  Click here for details of Tygart Lake State Park: http://www.tygartlake.com/

Cost for the trip is $350 per person and is all-inclusive.  No deposit is required, but $140 of the amount is committed as non-refundable and due in the event of cancellation.  The entire amount of $350 should be brought in cash (no checks) on the day of the trip and forwarded to Coach Champion, Wilson or Vaughn – all of whom will all be attending the Fall Retreat.

A formal agenda will be released in the weeks ahead.

Registration for the Fall Retreat is now open.  Participation is limited to the first twelve registrants (Varsity, Shadow & Prospective Team Members).  Eight participants are required for the Retreat to avoid cancelation.  To register, simply email me at masonchampion@boyslatingolf.com with confirmation of your son’s participation.

Here’s to another memorable BL Golf getaway.  Go Lakers!

2012 Spring Break Trip
March 21-24, 2012

In what promises to be one of their most remarkable Spring Break getaways to date, the Lakers will travel to Bermuda for an unprecedented golf and team-building experience.

The boys will compete in matches against both the Tucker's Point Junior Golf Team and the Mid Ocean Junior Golf Team - with both matches being held at the host team's course.

Tucker's Point, designed in 1932 by Charles H. Banks, is a beautiful championship course with amazing vistas complimented by rolling fairways and deep bunkers.  The club also boasts an amazing practice facility - an amenity they have extended for BL Golf Team usage.  Click here for a glimpse of Tucker's Point: http://www.tuckerspoint.com/club/golf/

The Mid OCean Club has long been considered one of the world's top rated golf courses.  Designed by Charles Blair McDonald in 1921, it has played host to numerous championships and entertained countless world leaders and entertainers.  Mid Ocean ranks as one of the world's most exclusive gold destinations.  When not facing-off in competition against the Mid Ocean Junior Team, the Lakers will be permitted to play and practice as a squad.  Click here to check out the Mid Ocean Club: http://www.themidoceanclubbermuda.com/Home.aspx

The boys will stay at Grotto Bay - one of Bermuda's most breath-taking resorts.  Situated on more than 20 acres, the resort is constructed around numerous caves and overlooks the pink sands of multiple private beaches.  Grotto Bay has coordinated three breakfasts and four dinners for the Lakers during their stay - with each team dinner offering amazing views and delicious meals.  Click here for more information about Grotto Bay: http://www.grottobay.com/index.php

The boys will be flying out of Philadelphia.  Team Vans will leave from Boys' Latin and travel to Philadelphia Airport accordingly.

The cost for the trip is $1,250 - due in full upon registration.  This is all-inclusive: airfare, accommodations, golf, meals, shuttle.  the substantial savings is reflective of the host facilities' generosity and that of Grotto Bay.  Checks should be made payable to The Boys' Latin School with "2012 Golf Team Spring Break" in the check's memo portion.

Coaches Champion, Wilson & Vaughn will be attending the trip.

The boys will need passports that are good through September 2012.

Boys' Latin Golf Spring Break Trip to La Quinta Resort
March 14-17, 2009

In what promises to be an unprecedented spring break trip, twelve Laker Golf Team members will travel to La Quinta Resort in Palm Springs, California March 14-17, 2009.

La Quinta is one of the nation's top golf resort destinations, and boasts five golf courses - two of which are ranked within the counrty's top 100 layouts.  The golf courses have hosted the PGA Tour's Skins Game, The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, as well as the Tour's Q-School.

La Quinta rests in the heart of Palm Springs and is located at the base of a mountain range.  Guests of the resort are entertained by the beauty of the scenery and the calm of the weather.  Information about La Quinta can be found on the resort's website: www.laquintaresort.com

Between the 72 holes of golf they will play while at La Quinta, team members will enjoy their spa villa accomodations and outdoor terrace dining.  The Lakers will be shuttled via locations via towncar and mini-bus, and enjoy their rounds of golf in the comfort of golf carts.  The Team will play the Stadium Course, The Nicklaus Course, The River Course and The Mountain Course.

This trip is feasible because of the generosity inherent to the support of the program's broader community.  The Athletic Department and the Boys' Latin boosters have earmarked sizable financial resources to support the trip.

The estimated per-person expense associated with the trip is $1,200.  The variable effecting the expense range is the cost of the flight, which shifts daily and is impacted by group travel costs.

Registration is now open for the 2009 Spring Break Trip - and will accomodate only the first twelve registrants.  A check for $1,000 is due with registration and should be turned-in to Joy Kirk in the Athletic Office.  Prompt submission of the deposit in necessary in order to collect funds for purchase of airfare well in advance of the trip dates.  Checks should be made payable to The Boys' Latin School with "Golf Team Spring Break Trip" noted in the memo portion.

Turn In Your Gear / Charitable Grant Day
May 29, 2008
3:30 PM-4:30 PM

Team Members will meet at the Gelston Athletic Center on Thursday, May 29th in order to return their uniform and associated gear.  All team members signed contracts upon receipt of these materials stating their agreement to return them at season's end.  As per said contract, should an item not be returned, an offending player will be billed the replacement price plus a 25% restocking fee.  The restocking fee will be deposited into the restricted funds of the golf program, and used for future program development.

At the beginning of the season, the Coaching Staff purchased boxes of candy bars, chips, crackers and sports drinks, and donated them to the golf program.  Throughout the season, players, coaches and parents were able to purchase these items for $1 each, with the goal of donating the proceeds at season's end to .  At season's end, over $200 was raised from the sale of these items.  The Team's intention with the sale of these items was to raise money for dontation to charity.  Therefore, following the return of uniforms and gear, team members will meet to review proposed charitable recipients.  Votes will be cast and grants will be processed accordingly.  This event illustrates that all action carries potential impact - something as seemingly small as buying a candy bar can make a difference when approached with intention.

The 2008 Boys’ Latin Golf Team Spring Break Trip
Destination: Bald Head Island, North Carolina
March 13-16, 2008
Registration Is Now Closed

Event  Summary
Bald Head Island is a secluded community off the coast of the Cape Fear River near Southport, North Carolina.  A twenty-minute ferry ride shuttles individuals to and from the island.  Golf carts are the only method of transportation available on the island.  A grocery store, a clubhouse, a golf course, a restaurant, a lighthouse, and individual homes are the only structures on the island.  Bald Head Island offers a unique vacation experience, and promises to afford the Lakers an ideal opportunity for team building exercises.

A 4,000 square foot ocean-front home has been reserved for the Laker Golf Team.  Named “A Place To Wade,” this six bedroom, six bathroom home has a scenic view of the Atlantic Ocean, open decks, a screened porch, a fireplace, immediate beach access, and offers two golf carts for team usage.  Located at 6 Coquina Trail, “A Place To Wade” will serve as team headquarters during the Lakers visit to Bald Head Island.

Travel time from Baltimore to Bald Head Island is more than eight hours.  To ensure the safety of all travelers, the team will travel by private motor coach – chartered through Dwayne Greer of A.S. Midway Tours & Limousines in Baltimore.  The motor coach will offer comfort in its size and will include amenities such as a Restroom, Television, DVD Player, and MP3 Player Outlets.  Mr. Greer has graciously reduced his price for the Laker Golf Team and is offering his services at substantial savings relative to standard rates.

Bald Head Island’s Head Golf Professional, Mr. Ron Thompson has also kindly reduced the standard pricing for the Team’s Golf Experience.  Mr. Thompson’s generosity will yield unlimited golf for two days, unlimited practice range usage, and a box lunch each day.  Such generosity is unprecedented, and certainly most appreciated.

Coaches Champion, Euker, Vaughn and Schreck all plan to attend the Trip; which will offer an effective coach-to-student ratio and provide enough resource to ensure safety as well as effective guidance throughout the trip.

Additional Thoughts
The Spring Break Trip is the preeminent team-building experience for the Boys’ Latin Golf Team.  It yields a heightened sense of community, and team building.  Team members improve in their growth as individuals as well as golfers.  Though team discussions focus on the golf swing and course strategy, they also expand to discussions of self awareness and personal development.  Due to BL Golf’s recurrent presence every March, the Bald Head Island community has begun to embrace the Laker Golf Team – a reality that provides a uniquely positive experience to team members as they interact with Island residents.  The Coaching Staff maintains that the Spring Break Trip remains one of the most impacting and therefore important team events of the season – one which is offered at a substantial value, both financial and developmental.

Additional Thoughts
The Weekend Retreat should prove to be an excellent avenue of individual and collective growth for the Laker Golf Team.  Participants will be able to observe a post-high school environment through a unique hands-on experience.  Coaches Champion, Vaughn and Schreck are Penn State University graduates, and have a working understanding of the various facets of this trip.  Frequently, high school graduates arrive at college intimidated or confused relative to the transition which now faces them.  The Weekend Retreat is designed to aid in combating this potential reality by introducing team members to aspects of the college experience through a vehicle with which they are already comfortable – the game of golf.

Team Haircut Day
F.X. Studios
March 6, 2008
5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Event Summary
The Laker Golf Team is committed to professional presentation.  This includes incorporation of high-quality textiles, attractive color-coordination, and appropriate wash and care techniques.  However, it also includes verbal articulation, diction, non-verbal expression, and personal grooming.  It is the last of these that is the focus of Team Haircut Day.

Laker Team Members are expected to have a respectable, manageable, and presentable hair style.  Unkempt hair styles are neither desirable nor appropriate.

While it is not necessary, nor reasonable to mandate the same hairstyle for all Team Members, it is appropriate to require participation in an event that will “trim-up” and manage the collective presentation of the Team by tailoring a personalized grooming style for each Team Member.

F.X. Studios in Hunt Valley offers an unprecedented hair cut experience – and will host the Boys’ Latin Golf Team to an evening of fun and education relative to personal presentation.

While awaiting their turn for a haircut, Team Members will relax in individual leather recliners and dine on chicken wings, ice cream and soda while watching a movie in a private on-site theater.  During their haircut, they will be able to continue watching the movie, or instead enjoy a musical selection of their choosing.  Following the haircut, Team Members will be treated to a scalp massage before being escorted back to the theater for more fun, food and fellowship.

The Coaching Staff believes this experience offers improvement of collective presentation, individual education relative to personal grooming, and an evening of enjoyment for participants.

Participation in Team Haircut is mandatory for all individuals associated with The Boys’ Latin Golf Team.

Financial Cost Overview
The anticipated cost for Team Haircut Day is $45.00.
